What does God teach us about Pride?

Reading Time: 4 minutes

With June being, “Pride” month, I got to thinking, what does God teach us about Pride?

Proverbs 8:12-14

I, Wisdom, share a home with shrewdness and have knowledge and discretion. To fear the LORD is to hate evil. I hate arrogant pride, evil conduct, and perverse speech. I possess good advice and competence; I have understanding and strength.

Proverbs 11:2

When pride comes, disgrace follows, but with humility comes wisdom.

Proverbs 16:18

Pride comes before destruction, and an arrogant spirit before a fall.

Proverbs 21:24

The proud and arrogant person, named “Mocker,” acts with excessive pride.

Proverbs 29:22-23

An angry man stirs up conflict, and a hot-tempered man  increases rebellion.  A person’s pride will humble him, but a humble spirit will gain honor.

Isaiah 2:11-12;17-18

Human pride  will be humbled, and the loftiness of men will be brought low; the LORD alone will be exalted on that day. For a day belonging to the LORD of Hosts is coming against all that is proud and lofty, against all that is lifted up — it will be humbled — … So human pride will be brought low, and the loftiness of men will be humbled; the LORD alone will be exalted on that day. The idols will vanish completely.

Isaiah 13:11;19

I will bring disaster on the world, and their own iniquity, on the wicked. I will put an end to the pride of the arrogant and humiliate the insolence of tyrants. … And Babylon, the jewel of the kingdoms, the glory of the pride of the Chaldeans, will be like Sodom and Gomorrah when God overthrew them.

Isaiah 37:23

Who is it you have mocked and blasphemed? Who have you raised your voice against and lifted your eyes in pride? Against the Holy One of Israel!

Jeremiah 13:9

This is what the LORD says: Just like this I will ruin the great pride of both Judah and Jerusalem. These evil people, who refuse to listen to Me, who follow the stubbornness of their own hearts, and who have followed other gods to serve and worship — they will be like this underwear, of no use at all. Just as underwear clings to one’s waist, so I fastened the whole house of Israel and of Judah to Me” — this is the LORD’s declaration — “so that they might be My people for My fame, praise, and glory, but they would not obey.

Jeremiah 13:15-18

The LORD’s Warning:  Listen and pay attention. Do not be proud, for the LORD has spoken. Give glory to the LORD your God before He brings darkness, before your feet stumble on the mountains at dusk. You wait for light, but He brings darkest gloom and makes thick darkness. But if you will not listen, my innermost being will weep in secret because of your pride. My eyes will overflow with tears, for the LORD’s flock has been taken captive. … Take a humble seat,…

Mark 7:20-23

Jesus said, “What comes out of a person — that defiles him. For from within, out of people’s hearts, come evil thoughts, sexual immoralities, thefts, murders, adulteries, greed, evil actions, deceit, promiscuity, stinginess,  blasphemy, pride, and foolishness. All these evil things come from within and defile a person.”

1 Corinthians 5:1-5

It is widely reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and the kind of sexual immorality that is not even tolerated  among the Gentiles — a man is living with his father’s wife. And you are inflated with pride, instead of filled with grief so that he who has committed this act might be removed from your congregation. For though I am absent in body but present in spirit, I have already decided about the one who has done this thing as though I were present. When you are assembled in the name of our Lord Jesus with my spirit and with the power of our Lord Jesus, turn that one over to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, so that his spirit may be saved in the Day of the Lord.

1 John 15-17

Do not love the world or the things that belong to the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in him. For everything that belongs to the world — the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride in one’s lifestyle — is not from the Father, but is from the world. And the world with its lust is passing away, but the one who does God’s will remains forever.
