Do Absolute Moral Standards Exist?

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Atheists insist that morality is subjective personal and that there are no absolute moral standards. Atheists insist that that each individual person sets their own moral standards and that society sets the standards for civil morality. Thus, atheists point to the subjectivity of morality in the model they insist shows that morality is subjective rather than absolute.

By insisting morality is subjective, atheists choose to overlook the following absolute moral standards which are and have been applicable to everyone past, present, and future:

Murder is absolutely morally wrong and we each know this because no one has a desire to be murdered.

(Murder defined: the crime of unlawfully killing a person especially with malice aforethought – merriam-webster.com)

Rape is absolutely morally wrong and we each know this because no one has a desire to be raped. The old saying, “You cannot rape the willing.” stands true.

(Rape defined: an act or instance of robbing or despoiling or carrying away a person by force; unlawful sexual activity and usually sexual intercourse carried out forcibly or under threat of injury against the will usually of a female or with a person who is beneath a certain age or incapable of valid consent — compare sexual assault, statutory rape; an outrageous violation – merriam-webster.com)

Theft is absolutely morally wrong and we each know this because no one has a desire to have anything stolen from them.

(Theft defined: the act of stealing; specifically; the felonious taking and removing of personal property with intent to deprive the rightful owner of it; an unlawful taking – merriam-webster.com)

Lying is absolutely morally wrong and we each know this because no one really wants to be lied to by anyone at any time. We also know lying is absolutely morally wrong because no one wants to be lied about (slandered) or cheated by anyone.

(Lying defined: marked by or containing falsehoods – merriam-webster.com)

(Slander defined: to make a false spoken statement that causes people to have a bad opinion of someone – merriam-webster.com)

Atheists by their own admission admit that absolute moral standards exist.

Thus just as God stated in the Bible, atheists admit absolute moral standards exist when the atheist instinctively does not want to be murdered, raped, lied to, or have something stolen from them.

“The Gentiles [atheists] do not have the Law; but whenever they do by instinct what the Law commands, they are their own law, even though they do not have the Law. Their conduct shows that what the Law commands is written in their hearts. Their consciences also show that this is true, since their thoughts sometimes accuse them and sometimes defend them.” Romans 2:14-15
