Did Jesus say, “Come Follow My Rules?”

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Most atheists and some people who claim to be a Christian, insist that being a Christian is about following a set of rules. Their claim is that by religiously following a set of defined rules/laws/commandments/etc. that is what being a Christian is. Well, these people have obviously not read the Bible and what being a Christian actually means.

Jesus himself clearly states what being a Christian actually means. Take these verses for example: Matthew 4:19; 8:22; 10:38; 16:24; Mark 1:17; 8:34; Luke 9:23; 14:27; John 1:43; 10:27; 12:26; 21:22. In these verses (also in others as well) Jesus makes it clear that it isn’t about following rules, it is about following Him as in each of these verses, Jesus says, “follow me” to be what is which is required to be a Christian (a.k.a., follower of Christ Jesus).

Matthew 4:19 “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will make you fishers of men.”

Matthew 8:22 But Jesus told him, “Follow me, and let the dead bury their own dead.”

Matthew 10:38 Jesus said: “and anyone who does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me.”

Matthew 16:24 Then Jesus said to his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.”

Matthew 19:21 Jesus answered, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”

Mark 1:17 “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will make you fishers of men.”

Mark 8:34 Then he [Jesus] called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.

Luke 9:23 Then he [Jesus] said to them all: “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.”

Luke 14:27 Jesus said: “And anyone who does not carry his cross and follow me cannot be my disciple.”

John 1:43 The next day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee. Finding Philip, he said to him, “Follow me.”

John 10:27 Jesus said: “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.”

John 12:26 Jesus said: “Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be. My Father will honor the one who serves me.”

John 21:22 Jesus answered, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? You must follow me.”

By Jesus’ definition only those who follow Him are Christians. Jesus Himself said, “He who is not with me is against me, and he who does not gather with me scatters. And so I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven.” Matthew 12:30-31 Thus, everyone who is not with Christ Jesus is not following Him and therefore is not a Christian nor will they be forgiven.

So the longer you are not following Christ Jesus, the more you are committing blasphemy against the Spirit. When the time of your death comes and if you have yet to follow Christ Jesus, you have committed the only sin which is unforgivable. Therefore, repent and confess your sin and accept Christ Jesus as your Savior and start following Him. It is a choice that only you can make for yourself and it is a choice with eternal consequences specific to your decision.

God does not send anyone to Hell nor does He take pleasure in having people go there. “… ‘As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign LORD, I take no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but rather that they turn from their ways and live. Turn! Turn from your evil ways!…'” (Ezekiel 18:23; Ezekiel 33:11)

Yet God loves you and doesn’t want to impose Himself on you and thus only those people who chose to not be with God go to Hell per their own choice to not be with God. I suggest that you be wise, chose to be with God.
