Brittany Maynard: A Legacy of Death

Reading Time: 4 minutes

Everyone puts their hope in something. Whatever you put your hope in determines the trajectory of your life. Hope is an action we choose to take and believe in.

Where have you placed your hope? If you don’t take heed upon where you’ve placed your hope, you will find yourself taking action based upon the hope you’ve chosen to believe in.

A Legacy of Death

In the weeks leading up to her death, Brittany Maynard became the face of the nation’s right-to-die debate. Critics called her case exploitation. Advocates argued she was making her mark. Maynard said she just wanted to leave a worthy legacy. And now she’s gone [per suicide]…(1)

Brittany Maynard age 29, successfully committed suicide Saturday, November 1, 2014 at her home in Portland, Ore., after taking lethal drugs prescribed by her physician. Suicide (rather than living out her life) was a decision she made earlier in the year after being diagnosed with terminal brain cancer and given six months to live.

Brittany Maynard put her hope in death. Because she had cancer which was inoperable, Brittany Maynard didn’t see herself alive as valuable to anyone not even herself and thus with her hope in death, Brittany Maynard at the age of 29 committed suicide.

Human resources can never save you. Everyone dies… It’s just a matter of time. (Hebrews 9:27)

Brittany Maynard chose to commit suicide, she left to everyone a legacy of death. Brittany Maynard put more value on her being dead than on her being alive. Simply put, the legacy Brittany Maynard left to everyone is death by suicide is something to hope for in life when living life gets tough. Brittany Maynard’s legacy is to put your hope in death taking care of the tough times in life.

Brittany Maynard chose to commit suicide rather than live out the rest of her life with terminal brain cancer. Brittany Maynard placed her hope in death. With hope in death Brittany Maynard had nothing to restore her outlook on life… even with terminal brain cancer.

Physician-Assisted Suicide
A physician is a professional who practices medicine, which is concerned with promoting, maintaining or restoring human health through the study, diagnosis, and treatment of disease, injury, and other physical and mental impairments. They may focus their practice on certain disease categories, types of patients, or methods of treatment – known as specialist medical practitioners – or assume responsibility for the provision of continuing and comprehensive medical care to individuals, families, and communities – known as general practitioners.(2)

Physician-Assisted Suicide is basically an oxymoron. Any physician who would prescribe/administrator lethal drugs to someone is a murderer. Murderers are not true physicians because physicians are healers and comforters.

Healers and comforters are not murderers. Physicians who would and do prescribe lethal drugs to anyone are pushing dying as comfort. Physicians (whom themselves have not died) who push dying as comfort are saying that there is hope in death. Anyone pushing death is not promoting, maintaining or restoring human health.

Therefore, all physicians who prescribe and/or administrate lethal drugs to someone is a murder.

Regret
Before Brittany Maynard died, she launched her own campaign with Compassion & Choices, an advocacy group for the terminally ill. She even drew support from lawmakers (who have not died and rose from death) in a couple of states (Connecticut and New Jersey) who also place hope in death.

Regret is something someone who has successfully committed suicide cannot let those who they left behind know they have. Brittany Maynard who successfully committed suicide on November 1, 2014 cannot let everyone she left behind know what she is experiencing right now this moment.

Remember, the legacy that Brittany Maynard left to everyone is death. She had never died before and rose from death to know what death was before she committed suicide and died. Thus, Brittany Maynard’s placement of hope in death was something she took a blind leap of faith into doing with no means of return.

Brittany Maynard committing suicide is proof that she placed her hope in death. As God as my witness, I hope that in the last milliseconds of her life that Brittany Maynard cried out to God and repented of her sins and placed her faith in Christ Jesus as her Savior. If she had repented and called upon the Lord in the last milliseconds of her life, God would have forgiven her and brought her into Heaven with Him. (Psalm 86:5; Romans 10:13)

Yet in either case, I know for sure that right now Brittany Maynard wants everyone she left behind to know that she regrets putting her hope in death and that she does not recommend anyone to commit suicide. (Luke 16:19-31 )

The best measure of sin is regret. What do you regret?

Where is Your Hope?
Everyone puts their hope in something. Whatever you put your hope in determines the trajectory of your life. Hope is an action we choose to take and believe in.

Where have you placed your hope? If you don’t take heed upon where you’ve placed your hope, you will find yourself taking action based upon the hope you’ve chosen to believe in. Have you placed your hope in death? (Hebrews 9:27)
